YouTube Music app launches on Android and iOS

YouTube has always been a great place to listen to music. Now Google is doubling down on that fact with a new app designed specifically for playing to your favorite songs and discovering new ones.

YouTube Music is is available now for Android and iOS, featuring a familiar but simplified user interface. The app is designed around three main tabs. First is the Home page, filled with recommended songs based on your own interests. There’s also a trending tab that shows popular new tracks, and a favorites tab that keeps a list of all the songs you’ve liked on YouTube in the past. Finally, you can tap the Search icon to find a particular song or artist.

Once you start listening to a track, YouTube Music will automatically create a playlist of videos around that song. You can also tweak of each playlist with a slider that controls the variety of music you’ll hear. There’s also an option to turn off the video and just leave the music playing.

YouTube Music is free and supported by ads. However, you can listen ad-free if you’re also subscribed to YouTube Red, Google’s new premium video service. The company is still offering a 14-day free trial, so you’ll want to sign up for that first if you haven’t already before downloading this new app. Otherwise Google will stick you with a shorter two-week trial automatically.
