Xiaomi’s Mi5 is over a year in the making, but the company’s next flagship phone may finally be in sight. An alleged Mi5 just popped up on benchmarking site Geekbench packing the recently revealed Snapdragon 820 processor.
The new mystery phone is referred to by its codename “Xiaomi Gemini.” It packs a “msm8996” processor, which is believed to be the Snapdragon 820, along with 3GB of RAM. It also runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
That sounds like a flagship phone to us, though that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re looking at the Mi5, since Xiaomi also offers a series of Mi Note phablets. Still, all rumors seem to be pointing towards the Mi5 as the company’s next big release.
A separate report from mobile analyst Kevin Wang also suggests the Mi5 is set to pack a Snapdragon 820 processor. He claims that Xiaomi and Qualcomm have come to an agreement that could make the Chinese company one of the first to ship a device with the new chip onboard.
Qualcomm previously said we wouldn’t see the first Snapdragon 820-powered phones until early next year, but it looks like Xiaomi could be ready to reveal its Mi5 pretty soon. Hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer for an official look at the device.
