Facebook Notify app sends news updates to your lockscreen

Facebook launched a new app on Wednesday designed to bring the news you care about straight to your lockscreen. Notify is available now for iPhones and comes with support from a wide variety of news and entertainment companies.

The main way to use Notify is by following Stations. These are based on specific interests and powered by one news source each. Final Scores from FOX sends you summaries at the end of games played by the teams you root for, for example, while Daily AM Forecast from the Weather Channel will ping you with a weather update each morning. There’s also Hot New Trailers by Fandango for seeing the newest movie trailers, and Breaking News for the latest headlines from CNN. There are even a few non-news Stations focused on subjects like daily meditation and digging up old images from the Getty archive.

When you first open Notify, it will suggest stations based on your Facebook Profile, though you can also pick them yourself. Once a notification pops up you can open it immediately, or swipe left to save for later, share or dismiss. You can also boot up the app to see all your updates from the past 24 hours in one place.

It’s a pretty interesting idea, and one of the most useful new apps we’ve seen Facebook release in a while. Notify makes it possible to get quick sports scores, new movie trailers and more in one place instead of relying on a few separate services. The real question is how reliable this new app really is, and there’s no way to know that until you’ve used it for at least a few days.
