Apple Pay loyalty program kicks off with Walgreens support

When Apple rebuilt Wallet in iOS 9, the company said that it would eventually support popular retailer rewards programs directly through Apple Pay, too. Walgreens is the first retailer to build its rewards program right into Apple Pay, and it launches today.

The experience sounds pretty seamless, and should also allow shoppers to take advantage of sales without having to dig through their wallet for a Walgreens card. “Users can simply add the Balance Rewards digital card to the Wallet app in iOS 9 and use it at checkout with Apple Pay,” Walgreens explained., “Members simply hold their iPhone near the contactless reader with a finger on Touch ID and the appropriate rewards information will be sent.” The Apple Watch is also supported.

The support should be deployed through all of Walgreens 8,173 stores across the United States. Sounds like I have an excuse to go grab a bag of Jolly Ranchers at lunch.
