It’s been a while since we’ve seen this happen, but it’s just a firm reminder of the dark realities of game development at an independent studio. Once you finish a major game, there is always a chance that you might not be able to stick around while the bosses look for a new project.
That is the case with Just Cause 3 developer Avalanche Studios, which has been forced to release 24 workers now that it has wrapped up development on two major titles. It was properly staffed to make Just Cause 3 and Mad Max, but there wasn’t enough money flying around in between projects to keep everyone employed.

The transition between major projects is always challenging, especially for independent developers.
We have just completed one project and are currently wrapping up another. In starting up our new projects, we were not able to perfectly match the team sizes and skill sets of the previous ones, and we unfortunately had to let some talented developers go.
Twelve developers were given notice in New York. There was a similar number of notices given this summer in Stockholm, but right now we are in the process of rehiring some of those who left. We expect to keep hiring in the new year. This unfortunate event does not affect any of our current projects, and we’re taking measures to avoid situations like this in the future.
It’s a crummy story no matter where it comes from, but it is especially hard when it happens to a studio you really like. Avalanche Studios is one of the best in the business right now. Its workers have provided me with hundreds of hours of entertainment, and Just Cause 3 is still one of my most anticipated games of the holiday season.
Likewise, while I might not have been interested in Mad Max, the general consensus is that it should be used as a standard for how PC ports are judged, and you need talented people to do that.
