YouTube Red now available with ad-free streaming, costs extra for iPhones

YouTube Red, Google’s ad-free subscription service is now available. You can sign up on your computer, or through the YouTube app on Android or iOS to start your free month-long trial.

After that trial is up you’ll pay $9.99 per month, unless you signed up using an iOS device. In that case you’ll end up paying $12.99 per month instead. We assume that’s because Apple takes a cut of all in-app purchases, and not because Google hates iPhone owners.

Beyond ad-free videos, YouTube Red will include exclusive content from some of the site’s biggest stars. The service also covers YouTube’s new video game streaming business, along with Google Play Music. You can even save videos for offline viewing, or play them in the background while you use another app.

Overall YouTube Red sounds like a pretty sweet deal, combining music streaming, ad-free videos and more for the same price as Apple Music or Spotify. Go ahead and try it for yourself, just don’t forget to turn off auto-renewal on the subscription when you do.
