Microsoft’s big overhaul for their console has been in the works for some time, with the system’s steady stream of updates slowing to a trickle as focus shifted to the upgrade. The update will give the system a new interface that should improve controller navigation while speeding navigation and loading of the operating system significantly.
The most talked about feature of the update is, of course, backwards compatibility. Whether it stays the most talked about yet remains to be seen – if it’s popular, we’re sure to hear some numbers from Microsoft on how much use the feature is getting – but it’s definitely the most anticipated right now.
With late October and most of November as the time for many of the year’s biggest releases, Microsoft is under a lot of pressure to get this update right on the first try; a bad launch could seriously wound games like Halo 5: Guardians and Rise of the Tomb Raider. A solid launch could do a lot for the system’s image, though, and help it built a little momentum for the holiday season.
