‘Tower of Terror’ being turned into movie at Disney

Disney’s formula for turning popular theme park attractions into feature length movies is going to be put to the test once again. Deadline reports Tower of Terror, a ride inspired by The Twilight Zone, is set for a dramatic retelling on the big screen, with Big Fish writer John August set to produce. This is actually the second time the iconic ride has been turned into a movie, though that film, which starred Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, was made for TV.

Details are pretty sparse at the moment, so it’ll be a while until we see anything hit theaters. If you’ve never been on the ride (you should really check it out if you haven’t), the backstory involves five people disappearing after riding in an elevator at a fancy hotel. The ride itself is campy and not really all that scary—though the rapid free fall part is pretty fun.

Deadline says this will be a “haunted house picture,” so it sounds like the tone will be a little darker than your usual Disney fare. The company has a ton of live action movies on the way, but many of them are based on previous property, such as animated features. If Disney can turn Pirates of the Caribbean into a successful franchise, perhaps Tower of Terror can enjoy the same success.
