Ben Affleck’s “war-weary” Batman details revealed

Based on the trailer alone, it’s already pretty easy to get a general idea of what the plot for Batman v Superman will be. And the official synopsis further lays out how the whole film will play out: Batman will get angry with Superman, the two will fight, but eventually they’ll become best buddies. But why is Ben Affleck’s Batman so angry in the first place? Well, because he’s afraid.

In an interview with Total Film, Henry Cavill, who plays Superman, revealed a few details about the feud, and what sets Batman off in the first place.

What happens there is one of Bruce’s buildings gets destroyed and he’s trying to save all the people inside the building and he can’t. So he is this angry person who fears what Superman may do. Why are they just going to trust this super-powered alien? What if he does decide to turn against us?”

He’s found himself in a place of harboring a tremendous amount of rage for Superman. So it’s how we got there, and what that’s done to him, and what that’s done to people around him like Alfred, who are, I think, very scared and worried for him. It’s something that’s interesting and new.

Meanwhile, Zack Snyder explained his approach to the Dark Knight, and how he wanted to portray a different character to the one we saw in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

I had a really strong idea about what I wanted to do. I really wanted to do sort of a fabric-based Batman; not what’s become the more normal, armored Batman. That’s how we evolved it. I definitely wanted an older Batman. I wanted a war-weary Batman. That’s why, in a lot of ways, Ben was really perfect for me—we kind of aged him a little bit. It worked really great. I’m really excited about the Batman we created.

So we’ll essentially see a grandpa Batman who pretty much got too old to fight crime. Got it.

In all seriousness, I’m very much in favor of a more war-weary Batman, someone who has seen his fair share of combat but decided to leave the scene behind. Thrusting him back into the scene will be very fun to watch play out onscreen—I might be the only one excited for Batman v Superman.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will hit theaters on March 25, 2016.
