Star Wars: Battlefront III footage – A look at what could have been

Every waking day means another morning closer to the release of Star Wars Battlefront, a game that will probably wind up being the best selling of the year. Aside from the Star Wars moniker it boasts at the beginning of its title, it has plenty of other reasons to succeed like a talented studio behind its development and an unfulfilled legacy to finally bring to a close.

For those who were not around a decade ago, Star Wars: Battlefront II was a very impressive piece of software, bringing the large scope of the “battlefield” genre to consoles much earlier than most other studios were capable of. And this was not the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, mind you. I mean the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox.

Yeah, it goes without saying, Pandemic Studios knew its way around a limited piece of hardware.

Following Star Wars: Battlefront II’s success, LucasArts tapped Timesplitters studio Free Radical Design to create the third game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, but the project was never completed and never actually confirmed. We only know of its existence thanks to word of mouth, persistent fans pulling information, and, most importantly, leaked footage like the clip above.

As you can see from YouTube channel Ptoponline‘s uncovered footage, Star Wars: Battlefront III was very far into development when it was canned. And unlike the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront from EA, this one had a single player campaign with an original story! Just by looking at it, we can see that DICE and Free Radical took a very different approach to the design of the franchise.

DICE has its established formula that it doesn’t like to tinker with, and it feels much more weighty and more grounded than the high soaring ambitions of Free Radical’s.

Of course, it’s not fair to compare the two graphically because of how much graphics have evolved in the decade between the two games. Let’s not forget either that this is pre-alpha footage, but what do you think? Would you want to see Free Radical’s vision come to life with the power of modern tech, or are you happy we’re getting the Battlefront game DICE is putting out?

With Battlefront’s beta all wrapped up, comparisons should be a bit easier now.
