Square Enix fans are sailing on cloud nine with the announcement of Final Fantasy VII’s remake and the chance to see Cloud and friends through a whole new light. And don’t expect Square Enix to stop any time soon, as it is now promising even more remakes and resurrections from its classic library.

The company published its annual report today, and it highlights several very important ways of conducting business into the future. One of these ways is to ensure that classic franchises don’t get lost in the mix and find a way onto the new consoles and VR platforms.

We will revitalize some of our strong IPs in ways that meet the needs of the modern gaming market. For example, we will take an IP developed for earlier generations of game consoles and recreate it for the latest consoles, while also proactively developing versions for play on smart devices.

In addition, we will also explore possibilities involving VR (virtual reality) and other new platforms.

We want our longtime fans to relish reliving past experiences with a freshness that only the latest in technology can provide, while at the same time have new customers enjoy the IP as though it were brand new.

Well, thanks a lot for that Square Enix, but keep in mind, I already like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger just as they are. I’ve seen what happens when there is an obvious heart in your remakes, and the results are good! Likewise, I’ve seen what happens when there is clearly something missing. If you are going to revitalize old titles, be sure to do it properly and don’t go making them worse.

And also, make sure the older versions are made readily available too. Technology doesn’t automatically make everything better, just in case you needed reminding after a statement like that.

With that out of the way, what old franchises would you like to see Square Enix revitalize? If you had asked me a year ago, I would have had a huge laundry list ready to fire off right now, but with SaGa: Scarlet Grace, Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, Kingdom Hearts III, and a remake of the first Mana game, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot that Square Enix isn’t already bringing back.

How about it? Want another adventure with Chrono and friends? I’ve always liked the idea of that being a stand alone title, a perfect encapsulation of everything that was great about video games in 1995, but if it has to be done, might as well do it properly (because it certainly wasn’t done properly last time Square tried). The only way such a game could possibly live up to its legacy would be to become the perfect JRPG by the standards of 2015.

I think we still have to determine what that even means before Square Enix starts working on it.
