Marvel has been tightlipped about Daniel Brühl’s involvement in Captain America: Civil War. We know he’s appearing as Baron Zemo, but he hasn’t been seen in any promotional material, and finding a photo of him from the set has been hard to come by. That’s saying a lot, too, because there were a ton of leaked photos from the movie’s set (you can see a lot of them in the gallery above).
While speaking to Business Insider during a promotional tour, Brühl revealed a big detail about his character’s appearance. Apparently the Baron Zemo we’ll see in Civil War won’t be wearing a mask, which is what the comic character wore after it was permanently bonded to his face following a fight with Captain America.
“He does not wear the mask,” Brühl revealed. “You would be surprised, it’s different than what you’d think. It’s loosely connected to this character. But that’s what I like about the Marvel guys, some of the characters and things they’re dealing with always reference to current events so my character is from a different area than you would think.”
Marvel has already shown it isn’t afraid to deviate from the comic book material, so hearing that Baron Zemo won’t be a carbon copy isn’t a surprise. It also leaves the gates of speculation open as to what his appearance will be—and we’re still not sure how he fits into the overall story. If we assume the Baron Zemo we see in Civil War still had Adhesive X spilled on his face, it will no doubt be a gruesome sight.
In addition to mentioning his appearance, Brühl also hinted he could return later in the MCU, saying, “That’s the way it’s written.”
