Over a year and a half after Blocks first stormed the scene with the promise of a modular smartwatch, the company is finally ready to sell us something. You can pre-order the company’s modular wearable on Kickstarter now for as little as $195, though it’s not actually slated to ship until May 2016.
For that price you’ll get the Blocks Core, which offers smartphone notifications, voice controls, activity tracking, 1.5-days of battery life, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, haptic feedback and a color touchscreen. It also comes with a regular wrist strap for keeping the device in place. You can always buy more modules later on, though the company is also offering some pretty nice discounts on bulk orders through Kickstarter.
$250 gets you the Core plus four extra modules of your choice. That can be anything from GPS or NFC to extra battery modules or a heart rate monitor. Blocks will release even more modules in the future, including a SIM attachment, a fingerprint reader and a programmable button. It also partnered with a few big tech companies, and plans to offer software and module development kits so anyone can create and sell their own modules.
Each module serves as a piece of the watch’s band, and you’ll want to use three or four at a time depending on the size of your wrists. The entire setup is also hot swappable, meaning you can switch one piece for another without turning Blocks off entirely.
Blocks looks pretty impressive, and it’s definitely come a long way since it was first announced in terms of both design and capability. We’ll reserve final judgement until we can actually spend some time with this modular smartwatch, but if you don’t feel like waiting you can pre-order the device for yourself via the source link below.
