Once you get that copy of Rise of the Tomb Raider loaded up this November, Square Enix wants to make sure you have plenty of ways to keep your wallet open and upturned even after the game is loaded up. They’ve announced a season pass and, alongside that, microtransactions.
The microtransactions are the most noteworthy part – we haven’t heard a thing about them up to this point. Once in-game, you can buy different card packs that affect Lara in different ways. For example, the pre-order edition of the game comes with a “rare” Bullet Resistance foil card that gives Lara additional resistance to gunfire. These cards can be used in all modes (it should be noted there is no multiplayer in Rise of the Tomb Raider) and don’t yet have a price point.
The season pass includes two extra modes – Endurance Mode and a survival mode called Cold Darkness Awakened. There will also be a new tomb included in a release called Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch. The pack will also include “a steady stream of outfits, weapons, and Expedition Cards” that will come out over the first four months after the game’s release.
Forza Motorsport 6 did something similar with using cards to change single player gameplay, though they chose not to make it a microtransaction. I’m looking forward to Rise of the Tomb Raider, but elements like these always make me nervous, playing the game with an awareness in each situation wondering if it was designed to get me to buy power-ups.
Rise of the Tomb Raider releases for Xbox One and Xbox 360 on Nov. 10.
