It may have missed a record, but there is still a lot to be happy about on the red planet.
1. The Martian
It looked like The Martian was going to break the record for an October opening weekend which is held by Gravity with $55.7M. The Martian made a run at it, but ended up coming in with $55M. It’s doubtful anyone is too upset by that number.
2. Hotel Transylvania 2
Hotel Transylvania 2 had a very strong weekend dropping a mere 31.9 percent from its opening to take in $33M. That now puts it at $90.5M in the U.S., and is beating the original film’s 10 day total.
A third film in the series feels like a given at this point.
Drug thriller Sicario went in to wide release this weekend and took in $12M to land in third place. That puts it at $15M off of its $30M budget.
4. The Intern
The new Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro comedy The Intern dropped a respectable 34.5 percent in its second weekend to take in $11.62M for a new total of $36.52M
5. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials
The second Maze Runner film took in $7.65M and brings it to a domestic total of $63.24M off of its estimated $61M budget.
