Film Fondue: ‘Thor 3’ gets a director, and ‘Batman v Superman’ rating revealed

by Brandon Russell | October 3, 2015October 3, 2015 3:00 pm PDT

There wasn’t much this week. James Bond almost got crushed, while Jessica Jones revealed her strength (and penchant for alcohol). Beyond that, probably the best news this past week was that the Back to the Future trilogy will be available through Amazon Prime during October.

Because there isn’t much news to recap, how about we focus on what movies are coming out this weekend? The two biggest films are The Martian and Sicario, both of which have been getting hugely positive reviews. And they couldn’t be any different, so you won’t feel like you’re seeing two very similar movies, just with different actors.

Me? I’m excited for The Martian. People have praised it for its (relative) scientific accuracy, and it’s supposed to be a terrific thriller. If you’ve ready the book, you know what I’m talking about.

X-Files trailer

The return of X-Files is almost here, but until then, feast your eyes on the show’s first trailer. Man, it’s good (and weird) to see Mulder and Scully back in action. The trailer give us a quick overview of the show’s plot, which will span just six episodes this time around. Look out for X-Files to hit immediately following the NFC Championship game on Jan. 24, 2016.

Pacific Rim 2 delayed indefinitely

Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Universal Pictures announced that Pacific Rim 2, which was originally slated for an Aug. 4, 2017 release, has been delayed indefinitely. Universal said the decision was made so that “the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.” Not sure what that means, but it don’t expect any new announcements about the film to drop anytime soon. [LatinoReview]

Batman v Superman gets a rating

As if it really matters, but Batman v Superman was garnered a PG-13 rating from the MPAA. The description for why it received the rating is because of “some sensuality” and “intense sequences of violence and action.” So, um, watch out if you’re sensitive to content that features sensuality. Three more Fast & Furious movies

If the Fast & Furious franchise lived on for 100 more years I’d be OK with that. According to Vin Diesel, however, it sounds like only three more films are planned, rounding it out to an healthy ten movies in total. Vin Diesel said he will announce the director of Fast & Furious 8 soon; the film’s release date has previously been announced for April 14, 2017. [VinDiesel]

The Revenant gets a fresh trailer

A fresh trailer for Alejandro Ińárritu’s The Revenant has been released, and it gives much more insight to the film’s plot. Turns out there is one! Turns out Tom Hardy’s character is a bit of a jerk, leaving Leonardo DiCaprio for dead after he’s brutally attacked by a bear. Worse, Hardy kills DiCaprio’s “half-breed” son. So it’s a tale of survival and revenge. The Revenant hits theaters on Dec. 25, 2015.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige has revealed plenty of new Avengers details

On Captain America: Feige said that Civil War will wrap up the Captain America trilogy, saying it’s one of the most unique and different trilogies around a single character.

Small screen universe: At some point the movies will reference the TV shows, which means we might hear about the exploits of Daredevil and others in the future.

On Spider-Man: “I think we can do great things with Spider-Man. I think Spider-Man can serve great purpose in our universe and that’s where he belongs.” Look out for Spider-Man’s first appearance in Captain America: Civil War.

Guardians and Avengers teaming up: It’s pretty much inevitable, though it doesn’t sound like Avengers has a clear plan at the moment.

Infinity War: On that note, it doesn’t sound like Infinity War has been fully plotted, though there are “broad strokes.”

“One shot” movies: More than anything, Feige said scheduling has prevented Marvel from doing more “one shot” movies. “We are a small team, now moving into three movies a year,” Feige said. “It’s just about finding the time and place to do that.” [LatinoReview]

Rings delayed

I still remember seeing 2002’s The Ring in theaters, and how incredibly terrifying it was. I’m pretty good with horror film, and can handle jump scares. The Ring was a different kind of terror, something that was psychological and got under your skin. That said, a follow up to that film, Rings, has been delayed until 2016. It was originally scheduled for a release in November, which probably doesn’t bode well for the movie’s chances. I really hope it captures the eeriness of the original (which was based on the Japanese film). [Variety]

No more Terminator sequels

Following a poor showing of Genysis here in the U.S., Skydance Productions has apparently decided to put all future Terminator movies on hold. The movie threw Arnold’s Terminator back into the mix and turned the universe on its head by turning John Connor into a psychopath. Genysis clearly left room for another movie, but who knows if that’s going to happen. Sure doesn’t sound like it based on U.S. box office performance.

Thor 3 may have found its director

The Hollywood Reporter claims Taiki Waititi, who directed the hilarious What We Do In the Shadows, is in talks to direct Thor 3. On paper that sounds like an unusual choice, but Marvel apparently sees something in the 40-year-old to entrust him with the job. [THR]
