Chibi-Robo! has been an offbeat character ever since he made his debut on the GameCube as a house cleaning robot. Yes, offbeat even by Nintendo’s standards.
Perhaps that offbeat nature is why the robo mascot never really caught on commercially. For Nintendo, the upcoming release of Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash might be this character’s last shot at establishing success.
Speaking with The Verge, Procuer Kensukre Tanabe said that, “to be honest, this might be the last chance for us.”
“I’ve continually thought about ways to build this into a mainstream success…
…We’ve challenged ourselves in assorted ways along those lines, but I can’t say that we’ve found the answer yet.”
Enter Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash. Unlike the last effort for this character, which was an odd, augmented reality photo hunt puzzle game, this is a much more traditional gaming effort. Zip Lash is a 2D platformer where players will use Chibi’s plug as a sort of grappling hook in order to reach ledges and beat enemies.
Will that be the formula that puts this robo on the map completely? I’m not so sure.
Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash is set to launch for the Nintendo 3DS on October 9, 2015.
