SOMA’s hidden files reveal plans for a very different game

A world filled with computer screens and textbooks like the dark, wet world of SOMA is sure to contain secrets and Easter eggs, and last week fans unlocked the mother lode.

Players on Reddit and the game’s Steam forum found some weird signs of something hidden in the game and dug in using the game’s level editor and found the elements to a password for a file titled _supersecret.rar in the game’s main directory.

In that file, screenshots and files pertaining to an incomplete version of the game are included. Most significantly, a video featuring a very different opening sequence for the game. Prepare for spoilers below the video.

The product Frictional released ended up being about the idea of thinking minds simulated inside machines. Protagonist Simon wakes up in an undersea lab after having his brain scanned in Toronto, only to find out that he ended up becoming the template personality for future brain scans. A copy of his personality ended up copied to a bio-organic dive suit. In the original vision for the game, the whole thing seems to be happening inside Simon’s mind, which is what I’d initially thought was going on.

Kotaku has a more in-depth look at the material via the source link below, but it’s always interesting to see how things that seem like core ideas can change drastically over the course of a game’s development.
