Transformers: Devastation sports story mode, 50 challenge levels

It’s hard to tell exactly what goes on behind the scenes at Activision. One day, it’s a heartless, money-grubbing beast, slicing pieces off games, milking franchises dry, and cranking out ugly, boring licensed games. The next, we get something like Transformers: Devastation.

It’s impossible to know whether it’s going to be a genuinely good game until it’s actually in our hands, but there are lots of good signs to beckon us in.

Instead of trying to keep gnawing on the success of the films or picking at the corpse of Fall of Cybertron, Activision brought in the masters of action gaming, Platinum Games, and asked them to go old school. In this new behind the scenes trailer, we get a few juicy details to ponder until the game hits next week.

“In addition to story mode, [Transformers: Devastation] also features a separate game mode called “challenge mode,” says director Kenji Saito (who also directed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance). “The mode is composed of 50 stand-alone missions, and they are incredibly tough.” Saito says there are five difficulty levels, as well.

While the last couple Transformers games following the excellent Fall of Cybertron left a bad taste in our mouths, Platinum Games’ take on the franchise has us excited again.

Transformers: Devastation rolls out on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on Oct. 6 in the US and Oct. 9 in Europe.
