The fall film season is now in full swing, and business is picking up with comedies.
1. Hotel Transylvania 2
Movie going audiences were apparently ready to return to the Hotel Transylvania. The second film in the animated comedy series set records for the best September opening, outpaced the first film and is the best opening ever for Sony Animation.
Hotel Transylvania 2 took in $47.5M off a reported $80M budget. With an A- CinemScore it should continue to perform well for some time.
2. The Intern
The new Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro comedy took in $18.22M in its opening weekend. With an estimated budget of $35M it has a ways to go to hit profit.
3. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials
The second Maze Runner film took a 53.8 percent fall in its second weekend with $14M and a new domestic total of $51.68M off of a $61M budget.
Everest went into wide release this weekend and took in $13M and now sits at $23.12M off of a $55M budget.
5. Black Mass
Rounding out the top five was Johnny Depp’s latest, Black Mass. Based on the true story of notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger, took in $11.51M in its second weekend, dropping 49.1 percent. It now sits at $42.6M off of a $53M budget.
