I was thinking a lot about Kickstarter this week. You read about these Kickstarter flops like Yogventures! and whatnot, and you think, “Man! At least that hasn’t happened to me!” Then it really hits home when you realize that it has, one of the projects you’ve backed has gone south and maybe you wasted your money after being suckered into a risky deal. I read a negative update for a game I backed this week, and it left me less than thrilled…
…and then I realized I only sunk $20 into it. Granted, that’s a respectable amount of cash that could have nabbed me a solid indie game, a few Mythical Rare Magic cards, or even a nice lunch with the wife, but then you realize that some people sink $2,500, $5,000 into these things, and you’re like, “Wow! Suddenly $20 doesn’t seem so bad.”
I won’t point fingers or ask for refunds. From 2013 to late 2014, we were kind of on cloud 9 when it came to Kickstarter. It was a pre-order service. We just dreamed if it could happen, it would happen, and that these dream games would definitely get made! Nothing is stopping it now.
And I think we’re a lot smarter now. The crowd-funding scene’s mind now gets it! You can’t fund an idea for a video game, you have to have something that already has a working prototype, completed art, a plan, a schedule, all needed personnel on board, something the developer has already channeled much of the work and funding into and just needs a little help to drive it home. In 2014, we were dumb, but we’re smarter now that we know what to look for, and I think crowd-funding has benefited from a few setbacks. We can weed out the failures before people waste money on them.
Other times, games that look like they could be the real deal, like Grip, fail because of all this suspicion surrounding these failures.
To date, I have received full copies of four games I have backed: Shovel Knight, Adventures of Pip, Dropsy and Undertale. I haven’t gotten around to the later two just yet, but Adventures of Pip is one of my favorite games so far this year, and Shovel Knight is one of the best I’ve played in the last half decade. I can’t and won’t decry the process as a whole after enjoying these games so much.
After that, I’ve gotten a few beta options, vertical slices, and keys to Steam Early Access, but I’d much rather wait for the final games to be released and enjoy them as finalized products.
With that in mind, here are some recent screenshots of the games I’ve backed that have yet to be delivered. Some are well within their right to still be in development because their window is not yet over, others are making steady progress despite a few setbacks, and others have drifted well beyond the expected date for one reason or another. Delays happen. I understand, and I haven’t lost my cool about most of these.

And no, Hive Jump was not the last game I backed. That was Adventures of Pip, which I’ve already played, beaten and enjoyed. Way to get that one out there quickly guys!
