Sonos hasn’t refreshed its Play:5 speaker in a while. In fact, on the company’s forums, fans have been clamoring for a new model, one that supports features like 5GHz Wi-Fi networks and other new features. One forum poster even noted that one “megastore” was completely sold out of the Sonos Play:5 and that it wasn’t going to sell the product anymore. That’s usually an indication that a new model is coming, and now we have evidence that it may be coming sooner rather than later.
A tipster sent in an email showing beta Sonos software that walks a user through the speaker setup process. In it, the user is presented with an option to set up either a Sonos Play:5 or a Sonos Play:5 2nd gen. Our tipster selected the latter and sent us over imagery of what it looks like in the setup software. It’s just an icon, but you can tell there’s a complete redesign coming soon.
We have no idea when the Play:5 will launch or how much it will cost, though some members on the aforementioned forums suggest October might make sense, at least if Sonos plans to make the announcement at the CEDIA trade show in Texas.
