I have a bit of a challenge for you. I want you to leave this trailer running and shrink the browser window. Close your eyes. Imagine you are in a dark movie theater just before watching Mission Impossible or Jurassic World. The trailers come on, and you hear this latest clip from Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. Let it sit in for a minute…
…now, are you watching a game trailer or a summer blockbuster trailer?
I’m not one for this weird obsession the video game industry has for 1-upping Hollywood at its own game and being the world’s dominant entertainment medium, but Assassin’s Creed Syndicate doesn’t miss a beat when trying to hype itself as such. An explosively awkward intro, a list of characters told over a montage, each with a quirky one-liner, the Hans Zimmer Batman Begins background music setting the pace, the action beats and sound effects.
That’s all that comes to mind when watching this trailer. Gotta be Hollywood to beat Hollywood. Otherwise, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is simply the next game in a series that comes out every year. You play as an Assassin, you storm into a historical city, you clear the place of Templars. The end.
Cinematics aside, all I can picture is a huge map with a staggering number of waypoints I have to run between, and I think “No, thanks. I’m too busy.” Still, there are obviously plenty who like the formula since Assassin’s Creed is hugely successful every year and lots of franchises have adapted to its progression style.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate launches on Oct. 23 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and the PC version launches on Nov. 19.
