I’m head over heels in love with Dragon Quest Builders’ opening movie

Dragon Quest Builders isn’t shy about playing up its relationship to the original game, and that’s what makes this opening video so special. The PlayStation 4 and PS Vita game is set up as a prequel to the first game in the franchise, only the world has been destroyed! No world, no legendary quest, no Dragon Quest lore, no franchise! Oh no!

We need an unsung hero to help rebuild existence. That’s where this hero gets his motivation for ripping off Mojang.

I’ve been harshly teasing Dragon Quest Heroes for its similarities to Minecraft, but I’m fine with it if Square Enix is able to capitalize on the series’ distinct charm. No problem with that here. The 8-bit throwbacks are excellent, and this video just makes me plain happy. The thumbs up, the large ruffians, smacking the golem in the head with a hammer, the apple girl doing her thing. All totally Dragon Quest.

Here’s to hoping the whole world gets a chance to play it. Dragon Quest Builders launches in Jan. 28 in Japan for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.
