When it comes to competing brands, sometimes the best source of conjecture is the competition. Microsoft’s Phil Spencer, the head of the Xbox team, talked a bit about what he assumes is coming for the PlayStation 4.
The PS4 just received a price cut announcement in Japan. The system is set to dip in price by roughly $50 starting Oct. 1. That price cut hasn’t been announced anywhere else in the wold. Spencer, though, assumes that it’s coming soon.
Here he is with IGN.
“I fully expect they [PlayStation] will drop price. When I think about the playbook they’ve used in the past, we feel good about the plans we have in place going forward in the holiday. If history tells, then we’ll see a price drop from them coming.”
While Spencer never suggests a timeline for the potential price cut, other sites seem to think it’ll happen very soon.
Me? I’m not sure. Spencer’s right, history does suggest that Sony should be considering a price cut soon. However, the PlayStation 4 is the best selling home console by a large margin. Do they even need a price cut?
“It’s great for gamers when price competition happens. We saw that last holiday, and we saw crazy sales numbers on all of the consoles…”
That bit I absolutely agree with.
I’ll say this: if the PS4 does see a price drop, it’s going to be an incredibly attractive console.
