Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 available for free through Origin

Red Alert 2 Tanya

I’m not the biggest fan of EA’s online distribution client, Origin, but it can be quite gracious from time to time with the free classics through its “On the House” offers. I’ve snagged quite a few titles like Syndicate and Ultima 8, and this week’s choice is a little too wonderful to pass up.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 was the gold standard for RTS games in the pre-Company of Heroes days. Westwood Studios’ campy acting and brash tactics came to a peak here. I’ll never forget the joy of overrunning a base with hundreds of GIs, dropping bunkers, and just letting the machine guns fly. What a rush!

And Tanya. Who could possibly forget Tanya?

It might be a little extreme for modern standards, which are more precision-based and every unit matters, but Red Alert 2 is a fantastic throwback to a time when the RTS was more about blowing the enemy to pieces with a nuke rather than carefully dismantling him piece by delicate piece.

Download it quickly, because you never know when these “On the House” games will disappear.
