Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps is an online shooter for the PS4 and PC

Well, I thought for a while there that Capcom was getting Resident Evil back to its roots. The slower Revelations games and the remasters of classics hinted that Capcom was teaching its new generation of developers how the basics of the series works, allowing them to make a superior Resident Evil 7.

Instead, we now have Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps, a co-op shooter aimed for a release on the PlayStation 4 and PC. The game will be online focused, and Capcom has employed Unity, of all engines, to make it. Maps will be based on classic settings from the older games.

I can’t get upset at this one. I mean, I support Nintendo’s Metroid Prime: Federation Force, and that’s essentially what this is. A co-op shooter that is very clearly just a spin-off designed to eat time while we wait for the main show. The departure from tradition and Capcom neglecting to use its marquis Panta Rhei engine suggest as much.

A demo will be available at Tokyo Game Show 2015, so expect some hands on impressions. Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps will be released for the PlayStation 4 and PC in 2016.
