Twitter adds political donations with some help from Square

Twitter is already the place people go to rant, rave and sometimes even calmly talk about national politics. Now the social network is giving you a chance to put your money where your mouth is with a new political donations feature.

Unfortunately it’s not quite as easy as simply tweeting at your favorite politician to send them a few dollars. Then they can tweet out a special link, which will automatically include a “Contribute” button that supporters can use.

Hitting contribute will prompt you to type in your debit or credit card number and other information required by the Federal Election Commission. Once you’re done, you can share the same link with your followers. It’s not a totally seamless process, but it’s still a lot easier that most other methods.

Twitter is also rolling out new election-focused features. For example, you’ll get a notification reminding you to vote depending on where you live. Candidates and their campaigns will get a few other Twitter tools as well, including the option to include a link for collecting email addresses.
