iPhone 6s Plus supply will be limited at launch

If you weren’t able to snag a preorder for the iPhone 6s Plus this past weekend, good luck finding one on launch day. With shipping dates already slipping to 3-4 weeks, a new report claims Apple is having trouble manufacturing the humungous device.

According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has proven accurate with many of his previous claims, one of Apple’s main suppliers, Minebea, is having trouble producing the backlight module for the device’s 3D Touch-enabled screen. As a result, Apple has apparently turned to Radiant to pick up the slack, but even then initial supply is expected to be constrained at launch.

A similar issue actually occurred last year, too, with Apple unable to keep up with iPhone 6 Plus production. It’s unclear just how severely the production issue will affect supply, though it sounds like folks who missed pre-orders and who are hoping to get their hands on the big iPhone will be sorely disappointed.

Despite this issue, however, Apple is still on pace to beat last year’s record, proving that demand for the company’s smartphones are at an all-time high, and the company is upbeat. “Customer response to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus has been extremely positive and preorders this weekend were very strong around the world,” Apple told CNBC. “We are on pace to beat last year’s 10 million unit first weekend record when the new iPhones go on sale September 25.”

It seems as though supply was relatively ample once preorders went live over the weekend, though it appears things are drying up pretty quick. Now it sounds as though you might not even be able to track down the larger model once the device is available next Friday.

This year’s iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus upgrade includes improved cameras, 3D Touch and faster internals.
