Details revealed about main villain in ‘Captain America: Civil War’

We know all about the Avengers set to appear in Captain America: Civil War, from their motivations to what side they’ll fall on. But we still don’t really know who the main antagonist will be. Will it just be Iron Man fueled by his belief that signing up for the Superhero Registration Act will fix everything? Or will a greater threat arise?

According to Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch, Daniel Brühl’s Baron Zemo will be the movie’s “main villain,” a character who will no doubt cause the fractured relationship between Iron Man and Captain America to repair and grow stronger.

In a recent interview, Olsen revealed that she plays a smaller role in the film, though her character is more complex than ever.

“She’s someone who’s more powerful than she’s able to control and she ends up going insane because of it,” Olsen explained. “And she’s like a wildcard. You don’t know (if) she’s a hero or a villain and that’s a very fun part.”

In the recent art released by Marvel, Scarlet Witch was on the side of Captain America, though it sounds like the character could go rogue as she struggles to control her powers (and as she deals with the loss of her brother).

Olsen added that Civil War will focus mainly on the human element, as opposed to robots and aliens. “It’s darker and it’s allowed to be darker because it gets more in the mindset of humans rather than machines.”

We’re still not sure how Baron Zemo will factor into the overall story, so his motivations remain unclear. In the comics, Captain America killed his father, Baron Heinrich Zemo, though we’re not sure if Civil War will follow some kind of revenge arc. Zemo eventually went on to form a revamped version of the Masters of Evil, so there’s a possibility he could factor into the great MCU down the road.

Captain America: Civil War is scheduled for a May 6, 2016 release.
