When we last checked in with Star Wars Battlefront, EA and DICE announced plans to launch a beta test with several gameplay modes. Among them were a traditional 40 player battlefield map, a co-op survival mission, and a mysterious new mode called “Drop Zone,” one DICE promised to spill information on later.
Well, that information is now here, and we have no idea how many Bothans died to bring it to us. “Drop Zone” is essentially Star Wars Battlefront’s version of King of the Hill. Eight Rebels and eight Imperials will be tasked with collecting pods falling from the sky, and once they have secured a pod, they’ll have to defend it to claim the points. Collecting five pods is the key to victory here.
If players take too long to secure a pod, another will fall to speed things up, putting two markers on the map at a single time.
“This goes hand in hand with our design philosophy behind many of the game modes in Star Wars Battlefront,” Lead Level Designer Dennis Brännvall explains.
“We’re promoting the idea of a fast, action-packed game where you need to be mobile and think on your feet. Camping doesn’t really pay off.”
Pods also release power-ups when they are claimed, granting a brief advantage to the team who secures them.
No information just yet on how to access the beta test. My guess is it will be a pre-order bonus, but EA hasn’t confirmed anything. It should be soon, though, since the game launches for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on Nov. 17.
