Dragon Quest VIII’s debut sales show waning influence in Japan

by Ron Duwell | September 3, 2015September 3, 2015 5:30 pm PDT

Dragon Quest VIII’s Nintendo 3DS remake launched in Japan last week, and the sales figures have been tallied up. Square Enix’s longtime franchise has often gone hand-in-hand with success at launch, and it has happened here, but hardly on the same level as older games. The remake managed to only sell 585,000 units according to Japanese firm Media Creates.

Much like the NPDs, though, this only measures physical media. There could have been more sold digitally. However, even in spite of that guess, the numbers seen by Pokemon, Yo-kai Watch, and Monster Hunter simply dominate Japan’s longtime best seller. Even the Dragon Quest VII remake broke a million in its first week two and a half years ago.

What’s the deal? Is Dragon Quest no longer a guaranteed million seller in Japan? Could Japanese players already have it on their mobile devices? Is this a one-off slump because it wasn’t that much of an improvement over the original game, unlike the previous two remakes?

Hopefully, Dragon Quest XI answers all those questions for us in the new few years.

Keep in mind the original release of Dragon Quest VIII is one of the best selling games in Japanese history and one of the most popular releases in the franchise. Seems like it should have been a bigger splash.
