Three months ahead of the arrival of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it sounds like Disney has wrapped up the main villain for Episode VIII.
While speaking to a Spanish radio show, Benicio del Toro revealed he’s set to play a villain role in Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is currently scheduled for a May 26, 2017 release (about four months after the release of Rogue One in 2016).
del Toro has already teased he was in talks to make an appearance in the upcoming Star Wars film, but no official announcement has been made. And although Disney has yet to address the matter, del Toro said he’s playing a character who is “like the villain,” whatever that means. To us, it sounds like del Toro is simply trying to diffuse the situation like it’s no big deal. But as we all known, anything related to Star Wars is a very big deal.
His exact quote was, “Star Wars is coming up, we will see how that turns out. I think we start shooting in March.”
OK, so now we know when Episode VIII will begin shooting.
“The thing is, they don’t let me talk too much about it,” del Toro added. “I’m like the villain. But we’ll see.”
It’s hard to interpret a quote like that, especially this far ahead of Episode VIII’s arrival. It’s hard to imagine del Toro would so nonchalantly confirm his involvement in the film, but stranger things have happened. It’s likely he’ll have a villain-like role, one that’s more complex than being on one side or the other. Some people have suggested he might be a bounty hunter who is just doing his job.
That being said, if he is indeed playing a villain character, what does that mean for General Hux, Captain Phasma and Kylo Ren? Are we to think that one of these characters won’t make it out of The Force Awakens alive? So many questions, so few answers.
Either way, del Toro would be a terrific addition to a big franchise, and add even more menace to the Star Wars universe. If del Toro is already talking about shooting schedules and new characters, perhaps we’ll finally hear Disney talk about that new female character also rumored for Episode VIII. Last we heard, Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) and Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) were all being considered.
