The summer movie season is coming to a close, and this weekend ended up being the lowest total gross of the year thus far.
1. Straight Outta Compton
The biographical film of the rap group N.W.A. – Straight Outta Compton – won its third weekend at the box office and has now set a record as the highest grossing biopic of a musician or group. The film took in another $13.24M and not sits at $134.12M off of an estimated $28M budget. Considering there is only one big release this week (The Transporter Refueled), there’s a good chance of a fourth weekend at the top.
2. War Room
War Room snuck up on everyone to score second place this weekend with a healthy $11M. The faith-based film was made for only $3M and flew under many people’s radars as the majority of its promotion was done through churches and religious organizations. It also only released to 1,135 theaters giving it a very healthy per screen average.
3. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, the fifth installment in the series, fell to third place to take in $8.3M. That brings it up to $170.38M in the U.S. and $479.38M globally off of a $150M budget.
4. No Escape
No Escape was another film that showed up very quietly. It landed in fourth place with $8.28M, but reportedly only cost $5M to make despite starring Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan.
5. Sinister 2
Sinister 2 rounded out the top five with $4.65M and now stands at $18.51M off of an estimated $10M budget.
