Check out the Iron Man logos that didn’t make the cut

The Iron Man logo for the 2008 film is pretty simple, featuring metallic letters that appear as though they’re fresh out of the oven. It’s not much to look at, but it helps identify the character and the movie. Turns out, there were many other logos up for consideration. Let’s just say we’re glad they weren’t chosen.

In an interview with Fede Ponce, Film Sketchr revealed 10 other designs that were apparently being considered by Marvel. If we’re being honest, they look rough, almost as though they were created in Microsoft Word. But, hey, that’s all part of the design process; Ponce created some rough concepts, giving Marvel the opportunity to see if the logos matched the identity of the character.

Ponce explained that he and Marvel went through a lot of different concepts when designing, and tried to match the theme of the movie, which was about redemption and being re-born.

We go through a lot of iterations and concepts when designing, Ponce explained. For this particular case, I had read the script and was able to grasp what the director wanted to talk about in this movie. The movie in essence is about redemption, about being broke and being re-born. So the main title had all those elements in it.

After reading that quote, it’s pretty easy to see what Marvel went with the logo they did. Not only is it the prettiest to look at, but it best represents Jon Favreau’s vision of the character, and the events he goes through from beginning to end.

The Iron Man logo has gone through a number of changes since the first movie came out almost seven years ago, evolving along with the character as we move into Phase 3. But just imagine what it would have looked like had Marvel chosen one of the other concepts drawn up by Ponce.
