HTC’s Peter Chou joins visual effects company Digital Domain

HTC co-founder and head of its Future Development Lab Peter Chou has taken on a new role at a visual effects company. The former CEO will retain his position at HTC while picking up the title of executive director at Digital Domain.

That’s the company behind movies like Tron: Legacy, Furious 7, Transformers, and Iron Man 3. The studio has also produced animated visuals for games like Assassin’s Creed Unity, Destiny, and Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

It might seem like a somewhat strange move at first, but it makes a lot of sense for HTC. The Taiwanese company is gearing up to launch Vive, its brand new virtual reality headset — and Chou’s role at Digital Domain could mean an exciting content partnership.

As its smartphone business continues to struggle, HTC will be looking to give Vive the best possible chance of becoming a success. It faces stiff competition from the like’s of Facebook’s Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus, but it sets itself apart by being able to track a user’s movements.

Unlike its rivals, that means Vive can monitor your body movements and your position in a room and translate that into movements and controls inside a game. Those who have tried Vive already give it plenty of praise, and the device appears to be on the right tracks.

Chou will take up his new position at Digital Domain on August 31.
