Shovel Knight amiibo

Our dreams are coming true! Nintendo has heard the cries of the people, and it will soon be blessing us with a Shovel Knight amiibo. The leak comes to us from UK retailer GAME with a listing that has since been pulled. Following the leak, Nintendo officially confirmed the news with a press release.

The release indicates that the Shovel Knight amiibo will unlock cooperative play in the game for Wii U.

For the first time, exclusive to the Wii U version of the game, players can scan the Shovel Knight amiibo and take on Shovel Knight’s quest cooperatively with a friend. On Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, the amiibo can be used to level up and customize Shovel Knight with new visual enhancements, relics and abilities. These abilities can then be used in new, exclusive amiibo challenge levels. To top it off, the amiibo figure will be supported in future Shovel Knight games.

In future Shovel Knight games? Well that’s awesome.

To date, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu, and Sonic have been the third-party characters which have been granted the amiibo treatment. Without much other purpose, they have been mostly supported through Super Smash Bros… and with that, let the speculation begin! Will the indie scene be making its first splash on Nintendo’s fighting game sensation? If so, they certainly chose the best character to do it with. Shovel Knight is the most pure representation of the NES on the modern day market, a bit of a nod towards the history that Nintendo takes to heart.

Shovel Knight’s free expansion “Plague of Shadows” will be released soon, and developer Yacht Club Games claims to have a “MEGATON” announcement to make at Nintendo’s Nindies@Night event just before PAX.
