Uncharted’s PS4 collection isn’t just a straight port

There are ports, there are remasters, and remakes. How do you tell which is which? When does one become another?

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection is an example of what makes this definition so hard to pin down. While it’s definitely not a port, it’s not exactly one of the others, either. Eurogamer‘s Digital Foundry digs into what we know about the collection and compares, shot for shot, the differences that show just how deep Bluepoint Games is going with this one.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune sees the biggest overhaul, but the changes affect all three games. The games run steadily at 60 frames per second, which becomes easily noticeable when Digital Foundry slows the original and updated versions down and shows them side by side. It’s not just the framerate, though. Drake’s leather wristband has stitching where it didn’t. His face isn’t shiny anymore. Textures that looked kind of like leather before are now clean and clear, showing a patina of wear that makes them feel very real. Leaves look like leaves instead of something meant to represent leaves. Depth of field has been shifted slightly in many cutscenes.

But it’s not a total overhaul like we’ve seen with Halo and Gears of War either.

Either way, it looks stellar and looks like a great way to get caught up with the series if you missed it on PlayStation 3 or maybe just want an excuse to go back. The extra game modes don’t hurt, either.
