J. J. Abrams is getting a little liberal with the details regarding Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This news comes straight from the horse’s mouth as Abrams revealed some new details during his exclusive interview with Empire.
Warning: We have some very, very light spoilers about one of the characters in The Force Awakens below. I’m spoiler-phobic, and I didn’t mind hearing the news. Just be warned before continuing.
Kylo Ren, the hooded figure with the odd crossguard style lightsaber, isn’t what we all assumed he is. Despite his saber’s color and his black garb, Kylo is not a Sith. He’s rumored to actually be a member of “The Knights of Ren.”
“Kylo Ren is not a Sith…
…He works under Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.”
Supreme Leader Snoke, Ren’s aforementioned boss, is being played by Andy Serkis in both mo-cap and voice work.
Abrams also talked about a group called “The First Order.”
“That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again?’ What could be born of that? Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire? Could the work of The Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?”
30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens will actually feature a group of people who believed The Empire was in the right. This could be really cool.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits the big screen on December 18, 2015.
