13 Dungeons & Dragons cult-classics added to GOG

Thank goodness for GOG.com. The digital retailer has done more than its fair share of preserving older PC games, making sure that future generations can enjoy games regardless of their vintage.

The latest batch of old games comes to us from Forgotten Realms, the most popular setting for Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. 13 cult-classic PC RPGs that were all but forgotten to anyone beyond their most hardcore fanbase have been made available in three affordable Forgotten Realms: The Archives packs.

Collection One contains Eye of the Beholder 1, 2 and 3, and these are the only games from the entire set that I have ever heard of. Why is that? Because it got a Super Nintendo release, of course! Never played it, but I definitely saw the box long ago at a Microplay or Blockbuster. The three PC games are $9.99.

Collection Two holds a huge selection of titles that seem like one-off hits. Curse of the Azure Bonds, Gateway to the Savage Frontier, Hillsfar, Pools of Darkness, Pool of Radiance, Secret of the Silver Blades, Treasures of the Savage Frontier, and D&D: Unlimited Adventures, again, all for $9.99. I think Pool of Radiance might have passed by my ears at one point in my life.

Collection Three is just $5.99, and it contains Dungeon Hack and Menzoberranzan, described as “change in development from Strategic Simulations Inc. to Dreamforge Intertainment.”

“The quest for Forgotten Realms: The Archives was a gruelling, perilous journey. The rights were literally scattered across the world, and even with the aid of our trusted companions it took several years of searching and dead ends to round them all up.”

Sound interesting, and if I had the time, I’d love to check them out. Too busy up to my neck in modern games to give them a glance, though.
