Film Fondue: Are we going to see Wonder Woman battle Doomsday?

by Brandon Russell | August 15, 2015August 15, 2015 8:00 am PDT

I don’t know if it was just because the D23 expo was happening this week, but the major entertainment news that caught out eye was dominated by Disney properties. We had Captain America: Civil War news, along with some pretty major details about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. What more can you want? How about a full explainer about Civil War, which is just around the corner.

Speaking of around the corner, The Force Awakens is only four months away, which is crazy to think about. I can remember seeing the first teaser late last year, and now the movie is about to hit theaters. It’s wild how quickly things move, and incredible to think what it will be like to watch that film when it comes out. Star Wars isn’t just a beloved franchise; it’s a culture. People go gaga over the universe, and rightly so. Hopefully J.J. Abrams’ vision lives up to the earliest trilogy.

We’ll be at Disney’s D23 all weekend, consuming the news and trailers being revealed by its animated and live-action properties. As of this writing, we actually already got to see footage from Finding Dory, Moana, new scenes from The Good Dinosaur, and more. Can’t wait to see if any Civil War footage is shown off.

Ben Affleck as Batman in three standalone films

Warner Bros. apparently loves Ben Affleck as Batman so much that they’re going to build the entire DC cinematic universe around his character. Crazy, right? It’s especially weird since we’ve already seen Man of Steel, which we thought would kick off Warner Bros.’ new universe. But, nope, it’s Affleck who executives are going ga-ga over, to the point where he’s described as “the definitive Batman.” [DenofGeek]

Wonder Woman vs Doomsday

Speaking of DC, a new rumor claims Wonder Woman will go toe-to-toe with Doomsday in Batman v Superman. In fact, that scene of her fighting in the most recent BvS trailer was from part of her fight with the supervillain. Apparently she manages to cut off his hand, after which a bone blade grows in its place. Creepy! No word on if she actually defeats the beast, though it would certainly be a big way to introduce her to the DC cinematic universe. [HeroicHollywood]

Bill Murray in Ghostbusters reboot

After expressing some reservations about appearing in the reboot, it sounds like Dr. Peter Venkman will indeed be in the upcoming Ghostbusters movie. Bill Murray hasn’t confirmed the news himself, though sources have told The Hollywood Reporter he’ll grace the movie with his presence (not a ghost joke). Murray’s appearance in the movie would join Dan Aykroyd, who also featured in the first two Ghostbusters movies. [THR]

Professor X in Wolverine 3

It’s only fitting that a character who has been with the X-Men franchise from the beginning would appear on Hugh Jackman’s last Wolverine movie. Patrick Stewart revealed he’ll play a substantial role in the upcoming film, which will supposedly follow the “Old Man Logan” story. The movie is currently filming now, and is set for a March 3, 2017 release. [Collider]

No snow in The Walking Dead

You ever wonder why we never see seasons in The Walking Dead? Well, mainly because they typically shoot the series during the summer months, posing a huge challenge for production. There’s a possibility the seasons could be represented in the future, but it doesn’t sound like that’s a major priority right now. “It’s a challenge, and we’re gonna see what we can do,” said showrunner Scott Gimple. Constantine headed to Arrow

Many people were disappointed—but not surprised—by NBC’s cancellation of Constantine. But fret not! Matt Ryan will reprise the role for one episode in the upcoming season of Arrow. Not a huge consolation, but still cool that the character will appear on TV again. Ryan was perfect as Constantine, but the show just didn’t find an audience; blame the subject matter. At least he’ll appear for one last hurrah. [EW]

Benicio Del Toro in Star Wars: Episode VIII

While it isn’t 100 percent confirmed, it sounds like Benicio Del Toro will play a villain in Star Wars: Episode VIII. Del Toro said as much in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I think it might happen” he said. “I can’t talk too much about it.” Disney and Lucasfilm always prefer to keep secrets about its upcoming projects, so it’s no surprise to hear Del Toro himself doesn’t even know that much. But it sure would be great to see him pop up in Episode VIII. [ET]

Zach Galifinakis as Joker in Lego Batman

Sometimes you see casting for a movie and you’re left scratching your head. In this case, it makes perfect sense. Following Michael Cera’s appointment as Robin, it sounds like Zach Galifinakis will be the Joker in Lego Batman. He’s the right amount of goofy, oblivious and menacing. In other words, he’ll make for a good counterpart to Jared Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad. [Variety]

Mission: Impossible 6

There’s always an unusually long gap between Mission: Impossible movies. Ghost Protocol, the most recent M:I film before this year’s Rogue Nation, came out all the way back in 2011; before that, Mission: Impossible III was released in 2006. That’s not going to happen with Mission: Impossible 6, however, as Tom Cruise apparently wants the next one to come out by 2017. Considering how good Rogue Nation is, I’m all for a quicker release cycle between movies. [TheHollywoodReporter]

Toy Story 4 will be about Woody’s love for Bo Peep

Disney CCO John Lasseter confirmed that Toy Story 4 will be about Woody’s love for Bo Peep. Lasseter didn’t provide any details beyond that, but perhaps we’ll learn more at Disney’s D23 event this weekend. “At Pixar and at Disney, we only make sequels if we come up with a story that’s as good or better than the original,” Lasseter said. “That’s our rule. We don’t do things just to print money.” Cars 2 would beg to differ. [CNBC]

Inside Out short

Once Inside Out is released in digital HD and Blu-ray, a new short, titled Riley’s First Date, will be included as a bonus feature. The digital HD release is currently set for an Oct. 13 release, while the Blu-ray will be available on Nov. 3. A clip has actually been shared from the short, showing how Riley’s parents respond to her date unexpectedly showing up to their house. It is, as you’d expect, absolutely adorable.
