This Toon Skyrim mod makes me want to revisit Elder Scrolls

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released on November 11, 2011. Nearly four years later, tens of thousands of people are still playing it on Steam alone and mods are still being made.

Case in point, Toon Skyrim. Reddit user UniqueUses is working on a different sort of mod for Bethesda’s huge RPG. While most other modders are looking to raise the realism with high def texture packs, new sets of character faces, more detailed armor and things like that, Toon Skyrim goes the other direction.

UniqueUses wanted to design something that would use the low-end level of texture detail while still looking attractive. Despite that, it doesn’t look like it’s going to make the game run any easier on older PCs, as it uses other effects that require more processing power.

For developers working on PC games, though, this should provide some inspiration. If one guy’s unfinished work can look this good, maybe the bottom rung of textures for big games don’t have to look like junk. High tech graphics don’t mean much without solid art direction backing them, and stylized art like this shows that super-detailed textures don’t necessarily make the game.

Specific effort needs to be put into things like story puzzles, but UniqueUses is continuing to work to improve the mod before releasing it publicly.
