Destiny developer dishes on why Dinklage was dropped for Drake

by Eric Frederiksen | August 11, 2015

Bungie recently made the decision to replace Peter Dinklage’s voice acting in Destiny with that of Uncharted voice actor Nolan North. Some theories flew around as to why that might be, and now Bungie has offered some clarification in an interview with Game Informer.

While some fans were dissatisfied with Dinklage’s delivery of his character’s lines, Bungie found the Game of Thrones star “awesome to work with.” The decision comes, instead, from the logistics of working with a popular Hollywood actor with a busy schedule.

“We needed to work with someone who is more available,” said executive producer Mark Noseworthy. “Nolan is a pro, this is his thing.”

“We can just call him up and say, ‘hey, next week we’re doing this internal play test and it would be great to get some Ghost dialogue in there,’ and he’s available.”

The Ghost, your floating robot companion, plays a bigger role this time around. He doesn’t just tell you where wizards come from (the moon), but also is there to provide additional story information in the context of the game.

This comes along with a pile of changes accompanying the upcoming release of Destiny‘s The Taken King expansion, which includes an overhaul of the game’s leveling system and a change to the structure of the original game’s missions, making for one of the bigger post-release overhauls of a game we’ve yet seen.

The Taken King expansion for Destiny releases Sept. 15.
