Redmi 2 Prime revealed with double the memory and storage

Xiaomi is expected to unveil the latest version of its MiUI software later this week, but the company had some news to share on Monday as well. The Chinese phone-maker just revealed the Redmi 2 Prime, which boasts upgraded specs and a killer price.

The Redmi Prime 2 is an Indian exclusive, at least for now, and the device will be assembled at a factory inside the country. It packs 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Otherwise you get the same basic hardware, including a 4.7-inch 720p display, a Snapdragon 410 processor, a 2200mAh QuickCharge battery, and an 8-megapixel camera. The new variant costs just $109, which is about $15 more than the original Redmi 2.

The news marks Xiaomi’s first major push into India, where it hopes to see lots of growth moving forward. The country has a rapidly growing smartphone market, though it’s already pretty crowded with local company’s like Micromax and global giants like Samsung and Apple trying to gain footing. Still, the Redmi Prime 2’s competitive price should give it a real edge in India.

We’re still waiting for Xiaomi to unveil MiUI 7 later this week. The company is also expected to unveil a new flagship phone, though it’s unclear if that will be the long-rumored Mi5, the Redmi Note 2 phablet or something else entirely.
