I have been guessing at this one for a while, even going to so far as to predict that it would be an E3 announcement. It didn’t turn up, with the major remake announcement of course going to Final Fantasy VII. However, Final Fantasy Distant Worlds concert composer Arnie Roth has just given Ivalice fans a reason to get their hopes up again.
At a concert over this past weekend in Pittsburgh, Roth plainly stated that “there is a Final Fantasy XII remake underway.” “Remake” might be a bit of a strong word, and my guess is that he meant “remaster,” similar to the treatment Square Enix recently gave to Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2.
In fact, Square Enix even promised a similar treatment if Final Fantasy X|X2 HD Remaster proved to be a success, and indeed it did, all over the world. Roth also made the announcement with the game’s actual composer Hitoshi Sakimoto present at the show.
If it proves true, this would be a wonderful development for the game’s reputation. It is often seen as a black sheep of the Final Fantasy series, being the only main one not available on a modern HD console or PC in any capacity. Square Enix also seems distant from it, not enjoying the painful memories of its development hell.
We’ll see how this pans out, but I’m pretty sure Square Enix is working on this. It could announce it at Tokyo Game Show 2015 or even as early as gamescom 2015 now that the word is out there. I hope it proves to be true. Final Fantasy XII is one I never completely beat, and I would love to take around on my Vita.
Stay tuned for more on this rumor as it comes.
