Sony event on Aug. 3 teases “split-second photos” with new Xperia

Sony has some big news to share next week. The company recently revealed plans for an announcement on August 3, though it’s unclear if that means a new phone or something else entirely.

There’s nothing in the tweet above that confirms plans for a new smartphone. It is coming from the Xperia account, however, which suggest we could be getting a mobile device of some sort. Then again, we might end up with a photo-focused app instead or even a new accessory.

If Sony is planning to announce a phone, we assume it’s the Xperia C5 Ultra. The rumored device has been leaking a lot this week, suggesting an official unveiling is just around the corner. We’re expecting the new handset to feature a 5.5-inch 1080p display with an edge-to-edge design. It may also pack 13-megapixel cameras in the front and back, which lines up with Sony’s emphasis on mobile photography. Other rumored specs include 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a microSD card slot.

The Xperia C5 Ultra sounds like a pretty sweet device, so hopefully that’s what Sony has planned for next week. We’ll be sure to let you know what the company unveils once the news hits on Monday.
