Spike Chunsoft and tri-Ace revealed their original IP, Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky, in a 14 page Famitsu spread as promised complete with the first batch of online screenshots. If it doesn’t look like a PlayStation 4 game, that’s because it was also made with the PS Vita in mind.
The game’s description fits the gameplay. Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky is a side-scrolling JRPG with four playable characters in battle, taking a lot of inspiration from Valkyrie Profile. That classic’s sense of a doomed Nordic civilization doesn’t pervade in this game though, which is flush with clashing images of colorful sci-fi and beautiful nature. Plays like Valkyrie Profile, looks like Star Ocean, combines the best of tri-Ace’s library. I like it.
The game tells the story of 12 characters granted immortality by the battling gods who inhabit their bodies. Our heroes are killed in an explosion in modern day Tokyo and wake up possessed on the planet of Protolexa. Over the course of their mission, they must elect characters to send back to Earth while the others battle on.
Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky will be released for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in Japan before the end of the year. No mention of a localization yet.
