We already knew that Microsoft’s presentation at gamescom next week was set to feature the revived Crackdown series alongside games like Scalebound and Quantum Break. Now, though, we know it’s not just another trailer.
What we’ll be seeing is, in fact, gameplay. Xbox head Phil Spencer confirmed as much on Twitter earlier this week:
@TSobski Final Gamescom content review was today and things are becoming final. Lot's of nostalgia for me with the Crackdown gameplay.

Crackdown was a surprise hit on the Xbox 360. It released packed in with the Halo 3 beta and it was expected to sell well for that reason, but it ended up becoming popular in its own right thanks to a unique take on open-world gaming that emphasized super powered traversal and over-the-top combat. The sequel, unfortunately, was little more than a cash in that added mutants and set things in the same city.
The new installment hopes to revive the franchise, and if what we’ve seen so far is any indication, it looks like it could be very interesting. A physics demo shown last year making use of cloud computing to improve environmental construction was apparently something being worked on for Crackdown, suggesting the game could have the same level of destruction we remember from Red Faction: Guerrilla.
That’s all I want: collapsing buildings and tons of Agility Orbs. We’ll know more next week when Microsoft shows off the game’s first footage.
