Just last week we learned that Nokia is planning to hold a mystery event in Los Angeles on July 28. Now the cat might be out of the bag. A recent report suggests that Nokia is going to unveil its own virtual reality product during the event.
Re/code broke the news, noting Nokia’s intentions to enter the virtual reality market, but didn’t shed much light on what Nokia is actually going to show. We presume it’s going to be some sort of headset to compete with the likes of Oculus and the HTC Vive, but it could be more simple in its execution, perhaps something that could work with mobile devices like the Gear VR does. And I may be nuts, but after reading the Re/code article and re-examining the image above, it does indeed look like Nokia is teasing a VR headset in the invite — at least it looks like there might be two lenses, one on each side of the photo.
Re/code said it doesn’t appear that HERE Maps will be in the discussions, which makes sense considering German automakers are prepped to scoop up that segment.
It’s an exciting time for VR and Nokia certainly has the engineering talent to pull something like this off. We’ll see what sort of VR product it has next week.
