Shenmue 3 officially becomes highest earning gaming Kickstarter ever

Shenmue 3 has made a whole lot of money on Kickstarter. As of this morning, it’s officially the highest earning video game on the crowd-funding platform ever.

At the time of drafting this post with 12 hours remaining in Shenmue 3‘s campaign, the title has pulled in $5,576,518. Its closest gaming rival? The recently funded Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night from Castlevania‘s own Koji Igarashi. Bloodstained picked up an apparently paltry $5,545,991 during its pledge drive.

A lot of criticism has been lofted towards the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign. Some say it’s not enough money (it isn’t), and others insist that announcing it during Sony’s E3 press conference was in bad form (debatable, for sure). Whatever the case may be, the game certainly has demonstrated that it has a large and rabid fanbase.

It may not ever live up to the hype generated by years of rumors and jokes on the Internet, but it has definitely show that it’s a great brand in today’s age.

Shenmue 3 is a ways off, and I guarantee the title will need way more than $5,000,000 to see the light of day. For reference, Shenmue II was released in 2001, and it was made with $70 million. $5 million barely scratches the surface.
